RTS Kit is a working real-time strategy game written in plain C99 with raylib. It isn’t a tech demo. You mine gold, build a base, train an army, scout through fog of war, and fight a computer opponent that builds, expands, and attacks.

What’s in the game

  • 11 unit types: Melee, Archer, Knight, Worker, Medic (heals), Mage (splash magic with a minimum range), Scout, Falcon (fast flyer), Airship (bomber and transport), Boat, and Ship
  • 7 buildings: Base, Barracks, Archery Range, Academy, Air Factory, Guard Tower, and Dock, with prerequisites
  • Air, ground, and naval movement, with rules for what can hit what
  • Armor and damage types with an editable counter table
  • A computer opponent that trains workers, expands to gold fields, builds towers, uses flyers, and ferries its army across water by Airship
  • Fog of war, minimap, A* pathfinding with a per-frame time budget
  • In-game map editor with unit brush, test play, and whole-map zoom, plus premade maps (Dire Straight, River Crossing, Islands, Harbor) and a random map
  • Six terrain tiles, including lava and gravel as of 1.1.0
  • Swappable PNG art: drop in a file and it replaces the placeholder
  • F3 debug overlay, a readable font, and a web build ready to upload

Built to be changed. Units, buildings, tiles, and damage types are rows in tables. Add a unit with one table row and a PNG: the Train button, hotkey, inspector stats, description box, editor button, map keyword, fog sight, and minimap dot all appear on their own. The README walks you through adding a unit, a building, a map, art, and AI behaviour, and every code sample in it is compiled to make sure it still works.

Runs on weak hardware. Measured on a 4 GB Celeron N4120: 60 FPS with about 700 units fighting, 60 FPS up to about 2,000 units in big battles, about 30 MB of memory, and a 438 KB web build. The unit pool goes up to 16,384 for stress tests (it slows down at that size; the README shows where).

Tested. Clean-checkout builds with no warnings in gcc and clang, a scripted playthrough under AddressSanitizer and UBSan, and a growing set of automated tests.

What it isn’t (yet). No multiplayer, no save games, no sound, one AI opponent, and placeholder art. Linux and the browser are tested; the code should port to Windows and macOS, but those builds aren’t set up. The README lists known limits and where to improve them.
